Throughout time people have adorned their bodies with words or symbols that represent them and their status, whether these were as permanent as a tattoo, or as transient as a fashionable garment. Sometimes chosen, sometimes imposed, this practice communicates the status or state of the owner as interpreted by the viewer.

It is this relationship between the owner and the viewer that the Zeena metal collection appropriates in order to instigate a story and start a visual dialog that leads to a conversation. By placing words charged with meaning and symbolism in precise locations of the body, the artist provides a reason for people to interact with each other, get involved with others through the messages of the adornments or start a rumor.

على مر الازمان ، زين الناس اجسامهم بكلمات و رموز تعكس شخصياتهم و مستواهم الاجتماعي. كانت تلك الزينة اما دائمة كوشم او مؤقتة ( عابرة ) كقطعة من الحلي . و سواء كانت تلك الرموز و الزخارف و الكلمات التى تزين الاجساد مختارة أو مفروضة ، فإنها تمثل صاحبها و تصرح عن وضعه و مكانته لمن حوله.

تأتي تشكيلة قطع زينه لتثري العلاقة بين الافراد ، فتبدأ بخلق ذلك الحوار النظري الذي يؤدي الى حوار فعلي .. فكل قطعة منها هي كلمة .. و كل كلمة تحمل معاني عميقة و رموز متنوعة .. هذه القطعه تحتل اماكن متميزة من الجسد .. فتضفي جمالا .. و تخلق اسبابا للتفاعل بين الافراد و التقدير فيما تحمله من معني و جمال .

COLLECTION AYAT

In this pieces, an Ayah or verse, is taken from the Holy Quran to become a standalone phrase on a piece of metal existing away from its context; a material representation of its holy counterpart. When encountering this collection, the viewer steers towards a piece that visually attracts him. Upon reading, he starts to understand the meaning. The viewer is intrigued. On the back of each piece is the clue to unravel the full message. With the number of the Ayah and name of the Sura, he is directed back to the source.

هذه التشكيلة تحكي عن الظاهر و الباطن .. الكلمة و المعنى .. تأتي لتبحث في القران الكريم و اياته .. تسلط الضوء على كلماته .. تاتي بها .. تعزلها عن سياقها .. و تجردها من قدسيتها ..

عندها .. ننجذب الى تلك الكلمات التي تنادينا .. فنبدأ باستيعابها و اكتشاف معانيها . نتفكر في  تكوينها القران .. لذى خلف كل قطعة توجد الاية و السورة التي اخذت منها الكلمة .. و بذلك تكتمل رحلة البحث و الاستكشاف عند المصدر المقدس لكشف الرساله كاملة .

SONGS

The bracelet:

The statement reads “give me my freedom and let go of my hand” from one of Um Kalthoums’ famous songs, Al Atlal. In this piece, the words appear to be escaping from a thick metal shackle that is open from the back. You are asking someone to give you freedom while the cuff is easily removable, reiterating the fact that you are in this confinement by choice.

هو ما تغنت به ام كلثوم في أطلالها .. ” اعطني حريتي اطلق يديا ” .. و هي دعوة يحمل باطنها رجاء بالبقاء في اسر المحبوب بعيدا عن الحرية .. بعيدا عن الانطلاق .

هذه المجموعه تحكي عن هذا الاسر الجميل .. فهي اغلال سميكة قابله للفتح من الخلف .. و بذلك تؤكد لنا اننا في الحبس عن طريق الاختيار و ليس الاجبار .

Necklaces:

Although the necklaces look tough and chunky, conveying boldness, heaviness and roughness, the words that are delicate, romantic, gentle statements from classic Arabic love songs. They could be read as single statement or become the cue to continue singing the song.

ONE WORD

This part of the collection is based on the idea of a singular word, whether it is hiyam, the predicament of being lost in your beloved’s world or lost because of them or  gharam, a state that declares the beginning of a love story.  One could also chose tamam, to express contentment of a job well done, perfection or just closure. These declarations appear wrapped around your wrist or upper arm as a statement and constant reminder.

كلمه واحده

تدور هذه التشكيله حول التركيز على الكلمة المفردة و ابراز معانيها و من ثم كيفية ارتباطها مع الشخص رمزيا و فعليا ..

 فال”غرام” هو بداية الوقوع في العشق .. و اول الخطوات على درب الغرام و الهوى .. ذاك الدرب الذي يأخذنا الى ال”هيام” .. و هي تلك الحالة التي نبحر فيها في عشق المحبوب .. فنتوه في سديمه .. و نضيع من انفسنا في انفسنا .. هنا نبحث عن اكتمال الحب .. و عن تمامه .. “التمام” الذي يعبر عن الرضى و السعادة و الكمال و الاتفاق .. هذه المفردة نرتديها .. فيتمم معناها بالنظر و الاحساس و الارتباط .

Depending on how you read them, when worn singularly, these words could portray several states.

Helim is dream but it could also be read as halem, meaning kind.

Elim is knowledge or conscious, and when read as alam it means flag, or if read as olem, it means understood.

Salim is safe and at the same time is the root of the word salam, meaning peace.

When worn together, the ying yang of helim and elim represent the duality of the conscious and subconscious, the state of knowledge along with the dream state. The combination of alim and salim combine to state that knowledge is protection, and halim and salim together describe the wearer as kind and safe. They individually could hold themselves as form and statement, but together they further complement each other creating a balanced visual composition that states that the wearer is firmly in both worlds.

الكلمات تحمل في باطنها عدة معاني .. هذه المعاني تتجلى لك فقط عندما تبحث عنها .. فلا تري الا سواها و لا تجد الا هي ..

ف”حلم” تعني الرؤية في المنام .. اما ” حليم ” فتعني الصبر و الطيبة .. و “عِلم ” تعني المعرفة .. و ” عَلم ” تعني المعرف .. اما “عُلم” فتعني المفهوم .

“سالم” تعني الآمن المحفوظ بعيداً عن الاخطار..

و عندما يتلاقي العلم بالحلم .. او المعرفة بالخيال .. يتشكل لنا ثنائي الوعي و اللاوعي .. و عندما يرتبط “علم” و “سالم” فذاك تصريح واضح أن المعرفة حماية .. و العلم هو الامان.

عندما يجتمعان “حلم” و “سالم” فانهما يصرحان ان من يتقلدهما هو شخص طيب و امن .. صبور و مسالم ..

هكذا هي الكلمات .. كل تحمل في باطنها التفسير الذي نبحث عنه .. و عندما ترتبط الكلمات فانها تعزز المعاني و تضيف لمن يرتديها ذلك التوازن في التعبير و المنظور والمعنى .

Al-Haq, one of the ninety nine names of God, meaning the truth, is nestled on the base of your neck. Inspired by the Arabic proverb “I will say the truth even if it costs me my neck,” the word appears proudly high on the chest to be seen and understood by the viewer. The composition is mirrored so when reflecting in a mirror, the owner becomes also the viewer.

الحق .. احد اسمائه التسع و تسعون.. مكانها العنق .. لان من يقول الحق قد يكلفه قطع عنقه .. تتبوأ اعلى الصدر لانها واضحه و صريحة و مفهومة للرائي .. اما كونها مقلوبة فذلك لان الحق هو في عين من يحملها و يرتديها .. فيشاهدها في المرآة صحيحة كما يجب ان تكون فيصبح هو المالك و الشاهد في الوقت ذاته .

Al-hob (love) is portrayed in two different ways.

The first is the yin yang composition stating that although my lover and I are seen in different direction we complete each other

The second is the reflective love declaring that my lover is a mirror of me

تصوركلمة الحب هنا بطريقتين مختلفتين :

هاتان القلادتان كل منهمها تحكيان قصة حب .. الاولي تخبرك ان الحب هو الاختلاف .. و الاختلاف هو الاكتمال و الاكتمال هو الحب .. اما الاخرى فتقول لك ان الحب هو انعكاس الارواح .. و تلاقي النظرات… فالجسد يستجيب للروح .. و الارواح تعكس هيمان عشاقها كما تفضح العيون المحبين .. فكل حبيب هو مراة حبيبة .. و كل خليل هو انعكاس خليله ؟

 فَمَنْ يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَه(7)وَمَنْ يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَه(8(  سورة الزلزلة

فلا تستصغر دقائق الامور.. فهي شاهد  ،  اما لك او عليك .. اما ان تقف الى جانبك لتعينك .. او امامك لتحاسبك..

HE AND SHE

He is the lover, the father, the son, the companion, the divine, or just the masculine part of the self.

She is the lover, the mother, the daughter, the companion, the divine, or just the feminine part of the self.

Whether they are on your cuffs, on your ears or around your neck, they would be accompanied by two secondary words, sometimes opposite in meaning but always complimentary.

The secondary words khayl, fine steed, and khayyal, meaning skilled horseman, are put together to make public that the one that takes me away as a means of escape, is the same one that controls me.

Another set of secondary words is soor, a fence or fortification as a mean of security and safety, but also confinement, and noor meaning light. The one that secures and holds me in, is the one that brings light into my life.

Sakan is a home, a dwelling, and also the root for the word sukoon meaning silence. Sukkon is paired with sikkeen, a knife that cuts, a knife that protects. The one that provides with a stable and quiet home, also defends me.

Thouqq means collar, ring, strap and when used as verb it means to circle, to embrace. Combined with Najat meaning safety, escape or salvation, together they create a lifesaver.

هو العاشق .. الاب .. الابن .. أو الشريك و المكمل و المسيطر .. هو ذلك الرجل في النفس او الجسد او الذات .

هي العاشقه .. الام و البنت .. الشريكة .. المكملة و المسيطرة .. هي الانثى في النفس و الجسد و الذات .

قد تتمثل كقطعة تحيط معصمك .. على اذنيك او حول عنقك .. و تصاحبها دائما كلمتان .. تتخالفان في المعني و تكتملان في التفسير ..

فتأتي الخيل لتصاحب خيالها .. هي الفرس التي تريد ان تهرب بعيدا مع فارسها .. هي نحن .. انفسنا و ذاتنا و رغباتنا ..

اما السور فهو الاحاطة .. و النور هي الاضاءة .. و هما الحماية و المعرفة و الحصن و العلم .. فمن يحيطني و يوفر لي الامان  هو الضوء الذي يرشدني في حياتي

و السكن هو المسكن و السكون .. أي الصمت و الاستقرار .. و تأتي منها السكين التي قد تجرح و قد تحمي .. و باقترانهما فانهما يعلنان ان من كان لي سكنا هو من سيحميني و يذود عني .

الطوق يطوّق .. و النجاة سلامة .. فالطوق احتضان .. و احاطة و حماية .. و النجاة هي الامان و السلام و الراحة .. يرتبطان ليعلنان انهما المخرج و الاستقرار .

Hiya necklace 1:

In the Arabic language, dots on the letters came in at a later stage. Adding or subtracting dots changes the letter and thus the meaning. If you put the dots on a seen (s), making it a sheen (sh), you will get a common Arab proverb say

“She’s an evil that you must have” while removing the dots makes it read

“She’s a secret you must have.” Although the dots were not put directly above the seen they are found within the piece, to be interpreted as whichever meaning the wearer or the viewer prefers.

في اللغة سبقت الحروف النقاط و التشكيل .. و التي اتت لاحقا لتميز الكلمات و تثريها .. و وجودها او عدمه قد يغير الكلمة و بالتالي معناها .

و كما قالت العرب عن المرأة : هي شر لابد منه .. هنا .. عندما تختفي النقاط تصبح المرأة سر لابد منه .. و شتان ما بين الاشرار و الاسرار .

لذا وضعت النقاط بجانب السين لتجاورها .. و تحل ضيفة على مرتديها و قارئها .. فاما ان تكون علي السين او بجانبها .. كيفما يرى القارئ و يفضل.
